Giants eliminate Thunderbirds from WHL playoffs with 5-1 win

VANCOUVER (CP) - Michel Repik set up three goals as the Vancouver Giants earned a 5-1 win over the Seattle Thunderbirds on Friday night to win their WHL Western Conference semifinal series in five games.

Kenndal McArdle, Milan Lucic, Mario Bliznak, Spencer Machacek, and Cody Franson scored for the Giants. Machacek's goal extended his goal-scoring streak to four games. Tyson Sexsmith stopped 12 shots.

Thomas Hickey scored the lone Seattle goal while Derek Yeomans made 33 saves.

McArdle opened the scoring with a short-handed goal at 11:31 before Hickey tied it with a power-play goal at 14:15.

A failed clearing attempt by Seattle allowed Repik to set up Lucic, whose goal at 4:02 of the second put the Giants ahead 2-1. Just 26 seconds later, Repik hit a streaking Bliznak, who scored to make it 3-1.

Machacek scored at 8:24 of the third before Repik earned his third assist, setting up Franson's power-play goal at 15:20.
