For the last two games, Ryan Getzlaf
has used his big body to get in front of the net for goals. He has also centered what is arguably Canada's best line at this juncture of the Olympics with Corey Perry
on his right and Brenden Morrow
on his left.
Despite his success and the chance to play for a gold medal on Sunday against Team USA, Getzlaf appeared incredibly composed after Canada's 3-2 win over Slovakia on Friday -- one that ended with the Canadians running around in front of their own net.
He stopped for an interview with NHL.com on his way to the locker room, and here is what Getzlaf had to say:
They had that flurry at the end there, so what happened in the last 10 or so minutes that wasn't happening in the first 50?
Well, we were playing a good hockey team and they put the press on pretty good. Anyone will tell you when you have a lead in the third period it's tough to maintain that forecheck. Hopefully we learned our lesson here -- and we came out on top.
That goal you scored -- you probably at the time didn't think it would be that big, but at the time how big was it to get that 3-0 lead going into the third instead of just being up 2-0?
Any goal in these games is big. You never know if you're going to need it and luckily tonight we had it when we needed it.
Now you get a chance to play for gold on North American ice in a North American game. You saw the Americans won, so was there any extra motivation to earn a shot at revenge against them?
There's never any extra motivation when you're talking about going into a gold medal game. That's our main focus and tonight we were able to get the job done. We'll enjoy this one for a little while and then we'll get ready for the U.S.
How about your line tonight? (Brenden) Morrow scores and you score, and it just seems like that last two games you have really been going well.
We've kind of made it our goal to go out and forecheck and to create chances. They are going in the net now and obviously we have to continue that on Sunday. We have a big test ahead of us and our line has to be a big part of it.
And, Morrow, the way he's been playing lately?
Unbelievable. He's been playing great. The last little bit here he's getting more chances to contribute. Mo is doing a great job for us getting in on that forecheck and getting that puck back for us tonight.
