Six things to know about new Blue Jackets forward Gustav Nyquist

The Blue Jackets have a new forward.
The
signing of Gustav Nyquist
adds another winger who can play top-six minutes for the Jackets, bolstering a team that set a franchise record for goals last year and looks set to return 12 of its top 13 point scorers.
So what should fans know about the new addition? Here's a quick primer on Nyquist.

1. The basics:Nyquist is coming off a 22-goal, 60-point season split between Detroit, where he had spent his first seven and a half seasons, and San Jose. The Sharks acquired the forward at the trade deadline and he had a 6-5-11 line in 19 games, then added a goal and 10 assists for 11 points in 20 playoff games for a San Jose team that made it to the Western Conference Final. The winger stands 5-11, 184 pounds and will be 30 years old when the 2019-20 season begins.
2. A little deeper:In his career, Nyquist has a 125-170-295 line in 481 games. That works out to an average of 21 goals, 29 assists and 50 points per 82 games. He's also been a power-play presence for the Wings for most of his career, with 33 career goals on the man-advantage. At even strength, his possession stats have been solid, with a career CF% of 53.2, a FF% of 52.1, and positive expected goals totals the past four seasons.

3. He's dependable:Nyquist has played more than 80 games in four of the last five seasons, including 81 last season. He also played in all 82 games in 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2017-18. In 2016-17 he played in 76 games.
4. Before Detroit: Nyquist hails from Halmstad, Sweden, and came up through the junior ranks with Malmo before heading to the United States to play for the University of Maine. He was a dominant player with the Black Bears, scoring an NCAA-best 61 points as a sophomore and 51 a year later before turning pro with the Wings. Maine is also the alma mater of Blue Jackets head coach John Tortorella.
5. Horsing around: 2016 Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist is named after Gustav. The horse was named by the owner, J. Paul Reddam, who is a fan of the Red Wings. The horse finished the race in 2:01.31 with jockey Mario Gutierrez.
