BELLEVILLE, Ont. - Brendan Gaunce scored a tiebreaking goal late in the third period as the Belleville Bulls beat the Barrie Colts 5-3 in Ontario Hockey League action Wednesday night.
Austen Brassard, with two assists, Carter Sandlack, Garrett Hooey and Adam Payerl also scored for the Bulls (7-5-0).
Bulls' goalie John Chartrand was playing his former team and had a strong showing, making 26 saves on the night.
Barrie (6-5-1) got goals from Reid McNeill, Gregg Sutch and Tanner Pearson. Clint Windsor stopped 28 of 32 shots he faced in the loss.
Belleville opened the scoring early in the first period when the Bulls had an odd-man rush and, with the whole line crashing the net, Brassard managed to deposit his fourth of the season.
Just 40 seconds later Sandlack was parked in front of the Barrie goal and took a pass from Brassard to extend the lead to two.
Barrie cut the deficit playing four-on-four when McNeill let a low slap shot go that found the net. Sutch tied things up on a beautiful passing play from Colin Behenna and Mark Scheifele.
This was Scheifele's first game back in the OHL after seven games with the Winnipeg Jets.
Belleville retook the lead in the second when with a power-play marker from Hooey for his fourth of the campaign.
Pearson scored the only goal of the second frame to bring the game back to even.
Gaunce scored the game winner in the third whacking at a rebound in front of the Barrie goal and Payerl closed the scoring with an empty-netter.
