"Tonight, it came down to special teams," said Oilers winger Mark Letestu. "As well as our power play did out there in getting us a couple goals, our kill won't able to come up with the extra stop. You go 3-2 in the special teams battle, you lose the hockey game."
The Predators got the scoring going at 4:55 of the opening period, on the power play. Ryan Ellis hammered a one-timer past Oilers goaltender Cam Talbot to give Nashville a 1-0 lead.
The Oilers got a brilliant response from their captain just 28 seconds after the Nashville goal. Connor McDavid used his speed to get behind the defence and beat Pekka Rinne with a nice show of skill, for his 21st goal of the season. Pat Maroon recorded the lone assist.
Another power play provided the Predators with an opportunity to take back the lead, which they took advantage of. Filip Forsberg scored his eighth goal in his last four games.
The Oilers failed to capitalize on their first power play of the game, and after it expired the Preds came down the other way and scored. Vernon Fiddler potted a goal from the faceoff dot to put Nashville up 3-1.
Milan Lucic cut the lead to 3-2 at 14:12 of the second when he tipped in a shot on the power play.
The two-goal lead would come back to the Predators when Colin Wilson roofed a shot at 15:21 of the second.
Letestu scored for Edmonton, tucking a one-timer underneath the blocker of Rinne at 16:25 of the middle frame. Oscar Klefbom recorded the assist.
Edmonton's rally continued when Jordan Eberle redirected Andrej Sekera's feed in the slot with one minute remaining in the second, which made it a 4-4 hockey game.
Edmonton got back into penalty trouble just 14 seconds into the third, and it resulted in a Nashville goal. Viktor Arvidsson buried a James Neal feed to make it 5-4 Predators. The Oilers challenged the play was offside, but lost the challenge after a lengthy delay.
"Giving up three goals on the penalty kill is not OK, it's not acceptable," said McDavid. "You can't expect to win games if you're doing that."
That would be the dagger for Edmonton as they were unable to get another game-tying marker. The Oilers next game is against the Blues on Tuesday in St. Louis.
