Inside The Oilers Blog
"He played a tremendous game for us tonight," said Oilers Head Coach Todd McLellan. "He was physical along the boards, won his battles and he looked confident.
"There's a bright future for him here in Edmonton, we just have to keep that development curve in the right direction."
Patrick Maroon scored twice, Leon Draisaitl recorded a goal and assist, while Milan Lucic registered a pair of helpers.
Cam Talbot made 25 saves on 27 shots, ending the night with a .926 save percentage.
The Oilers opened the scoring just 1:25 into the match.
Connor McDavid pressed Jake Virtanen in his own zone, causing the forward to give the puck up. Maroon picked up the loose puck, fed it to McDavid and went to the net. The Oilers Captain gave it right back to Maroon for a tap-in on the doorstep. The goal was Big Rig's 12th of the season and 25th point.
Edmonton killed a Puljujarvi delay of game minor following the goal, then continued on the attack. McDavid rushed the puck up himself on two occasions, nearly providing the Oilers with an early cushion. Although the Oilers pushed, they didn't strike.
"Since he's got healthy, Connor's been taking the game and leading," said McLellan of his captain. "We couldn't get him on the ice enough early in the game."
At the other end of the ice, Talbot was doing his part to keep the lead intact. Michael Cammalleri lost handle of the puck, sending rookie Brock Boeser in all alone. Talbot got his blocker on Boeser's shot, keeping the game 1-0 Edmonton.
The Oilers added their second of the game late in the first.
Puljujarvi played keep away against the Canucks, buying himself some space within the offensive blueline then threading a pass to Jujhar Khaira cutting for the net. Khaira went backhand on Jacob Markstrom for his eighth of the season and 15th point. Puljujarvi registered his first of three points on the play.

"We know he (Puljujarvi) skated over the break," laughed Maroon. "He's getting rewarded by going to the net, he's scoring big time goals for us and making big time plays."
The Oilers exited the opening frame up 2-0 but on the penalty kill as Darnell Nurse was called for high-sticking before the end of the period.
Despite the Oilers being on the penalty kill, Zack Kassian opened the second period with an early breakaway. He was stopped by Markstrom and the Canucks were able to set up their power play and score soon after.
Alexander Edler released a shot-pass from the blueline and Daniel Sedin deflected it past Talbot, making it 2-1.
Brandon Sutter then erased the Oilers two-goal lead completely when he scored at 8:56. Sven Baertschi dished the puck to Sutter while on a 2-on-1 and the centre got a quick shot off before Talbot could slide over.
Puljujarvi rebooted the Oilers lead with 1:06 remaining in the second stanza.
Adam Larsson, who hit the post midway through the second, put the puck on net and Puljujarvi - as he's been wont to do - picked up the garbage and slammed it past Markstrom with his ninth of the campaign and second point of the game.

"Probably the best game I've ever seen him play," said Draisaitl of his linemate Puljujarvi. "It was nice to see him have a good night."
In the third period, the Orange & Blue regained their two-goal lead.
Puljujarvi fed the puck to Draisaitl on a 2-on-1 and the Deutschland Dangler one-timed it high past Markstrom for his 12th of the season. Puljujarvi picked up his second assist of the night to go along with his goal, giving him his first career three-point night.
"It's nice to see someone else step up and we're all really happy for him," said Draisaitl of Puljujarvi.
Maroon added an empty net goal late in the game to make it 5-2.
"It's nice coming out of the break winning because last break we didn't have that," said Maroon. "This is a good group of guys in here. We're not done yet and this season is not over for us."
The Oilers improve to 21-23-3 on the season. The club will host the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday.
