NYI Recap: Islanders lose in shootout, 2-1

The New York Islanders picked up a point, but left one on the table on Monday night, falling 2-1 in a shootout to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Anthony Beauvillier put the Islanders ahead 1-0 in the second period, but one goal was not enough despite a strong game from Robin Lehner (23 saves) and a solid, physical effort by the Isles. Derick Brassard scored the game-tying goal in the third period and Jake Guentzel scored the game-decider in the fifth round of the shootout.
"I thought we deserved more than one point," Beauvillier said. "I thought we did a great job tonight, especially against their top guys. We were physical, we were hungry on pucks. It's just frustrating."

LEHNER LOOKS SHARP IN SHOOTOUT LOSS:

For the second time in as many starts, Robin Lehner pitched a one-hitter for the Islanders, but wound up with a shootout loss.
Lehner was sharp on Monday night, stymying the Penguins' high-octane attack. He started the game with a highlight reel save on Phil Kessel, making seven total stops on the Penguins co-leading scorer. The 6'4, 240 lbs. goalie's night included a skate save on a Guentzel redirection in the slot and strong pad save on Sidney Crosby's ensuing rebound.
"I thought he made some real difficult saves really early and at key moments," Head Coach Barry Trotz said. "It was a good game for him to come back. Our disappointment is we didn't get the two points."

PIT@NYI: Lehner makes a pair of solid pad saves

Only Brassard's rebound at the side of the net in the third period got by Lehner in regulation and the Isles goalie stopped three-of-five shootout attempts. He was named the first star at the end of the game, despite the loss.
Lehner is still looking for his first win since Oct. 30, but after back-to-back, one-goal, shootout losses - the other being a 35-save effort on Nov. 29 vs Boston - Lehner looks to be finding his form.
"I thought Robin has played pretty well in his last couple outings," Trotz said. "Obviously he's had a couple of setbacks in terms of injuries and his schedule to come back and play. He played well [tonight]."

PIT@NYI: Beauvillier blasts one-timer past DeSmith

BEAUVILLIER SCORES AT COLISEUM:

Anthony Beauvillier must really like playing at the Coliseum.
Beauvillier scored his second goal in as many games at NYCB LIVE, pulling the trigger on a beautifully executed tic-tac-toe from Mathew Barzal and Josh Bailey at 6:32 of the second period.
Barzal started the rotation, keeping in a Penguins clearing attempt at the blue line before feeding Bailey down low. Bailey dished the puck across to Beauvillier, who beat Casey DeSmith (23 saves) in for his eighth goal of the season.

PIT 2 vs. NYI 1: Ryan Pulock

ISLES CAN'T CONVERT IN OVERTIME:

The Islanders had their chance to win the game in overtime. With Brassard off for tripping, the Islanders had two minutes of four-on-three hockey in the Penguins zone.
The power play ran through Ryan Pulock, who teed up a series of one-timers, but the Islanders only managed one shot on net in the extra frame. As they had all night, the Penguins found ways to clog up shooting lanes, blocking 24 total shots on Monday.
"You get that opportunity at that point in the game, you can dictate a game that way and we weren't able to do that," Pulock said.

CLUTTERBUCK, EBERLE LEAVE GAME:

Monday's affair was a physical one and the Islanders did not come out unscathed.
Cal Clutterbuck and Jordan Eberle both left the game in the third period and did not return. Clutterbuck was hurt after a post-whistle skirmish with Kris Letang with 7:31 to play while Eberle left with 1:05 to play in the period. Trotz did not have an update on Clutterbuck or Eberle after the game.
Thomas Hickey briefly left the game after taking a Evgeni Malkin one-timer off the helmet with 7:31 to play in the third period, but returned.
