Gabriel with two points in season debut as Winterhawks beat the Silvertips 5-1 @NHL

PORTLAND, Ore. - Oliver Gabriel scored once and added an assist in his season debut as the Portland Winterhawks downed the Everett Silvertips 5-1 on Friday night in the Western Hockey League.

Brendan Leipsic, Taylor Leier, Sven B?rtschi and Chase De Leo also scored for Portland (18-9-2).

Josh Birkholz scored his team-leading 11th goal for Everett (5-18-4).

Mac Carruth stopped 22 shots to earn the victory while Kent Simpson made 38 saves in defeat.

The Winterhawks scored twice on four power-play attempts as the Silvertips finished 0-for-5 with the extra skater.

Gabriel, 20, had been playing with the Springfield Falcons of the American Hockey League, but earlier this week the parent Columbus Blue Jackets decided to send him back for one final season of junior hockey.
