Laura Schuler Team Canada

Laura Schuler is hoping her work with the National Hockey League Coaches' Association and continued camaraderie between rising female coaches and their male counterparts in the professional game one day soon will lead to a woman standing behind the bench coaching in the NHL.

Schuler, a former player and coach with Canada's national women's hockey team, conducts a bi-monthly webinar series called "Finding the Details" through the NHLCA.
She joined co-hosts Dan Rosen and Shawn P. Roarke on the NHL @TheRink podcast Friday to discuss the future role of female coaches in the men's game and the importance of continued development and opportunities for them.
"I think back in 1972 it was something like 90 percent of all female college athletes were coached by women and today that number has dropped significantly, hovering around 42 percent," Schuler said. "If you look at NCAA Division I hockey, I think only 34 percent of head coaching positions are occupied by women. We have to continue to support women and give women these opportunities and grow our female coaches.
"I just think it's so important for our next generation, for young girls to grow up knowing they can have the choice to either coach women or coach men. I think there are so many amazing women out there who are tremendous leaders and tremendous coaches."
Rosen and Roarke were joined by NHL.com columnist Nicholas J. Cotsonika at the top of the show for a roundtable discussion hitting on a plethora of topics, including the new seven-year television, streaming and media rights deal the NHL signed with ESPN and The Walt Disney Company.
They also discussed various teams that could be heavily involved in the upcoming 2021 NHL Trade Deadline, which is April 12, including the Nashville Predators, Vancouver Canucks and Detroit Red Wings; the impact of a pandemic season on the 2021 NHL Draft, which is scheduled for July 23-24; the future of Jack Eichel with the Buffalo Sabres; and what coach Darryl Sutter can do for the Calgary Flames.
The podcast is free and listeners can subscribe on all podcast platforms. It is also available on
