It wasn't perfect, but it was a lot better for the Blue Jackets than what happened Tuesday night at Nationwide Arena against the Edmonton Oilers.
They gave up four more goals, after falling 7-2 to the Oilers, but the Blue Jackets potted six of their own this time - coughing up a 3-0 lead in the second period, then forging back ahead for a 6-4 victory against the New York Islanders.
"It was a bit of a track meet tonight, both teams," said Columbus coach John Tortorella, whose team reached the 20-win mark 32 games into the regular season (20-11-1). "[The Islanders] can score. That's a good team, so you have to give them a little credit … I just like the way we didn't lose our composure when we gave the goals back, and just kept on trying to play."
Three Blue Jackets goals were scored by roving defensemen Zach Werenski, Seth Jones and Markus Nutivaara. One was scored by their captain, Nick Foligno, late in the second period for what turned out to be the game-winner. One was scored by their top center - rookie Pierre-Luc Dubois - and their final goal went into an empty net with a second left in the third, courtesy of Josh Anderson, the team's leading goal-scorer (12).
Not a bad night, indeed, for Columbus - which won despite Islanders forward Josh Bailey netting a hat trick. It was the first victory for the Jackets in 34 games when that's occurred (1-32-1).
"That's what we want," Foligno said of the offensive outburst. "Hopefully because we do it, it provides us six goals a night, but just the way we played … I just hope guys are understanding that's how we need to play. So many guys contributed tonight in that [offensive] category, that area, and it was nice to see."
Here's how it went down:

Scoring chances 5v5: Blue Jackets 13, Islanders 5
High-Danger chances 5v5: Blue Jackets 10, Islanders 3
Period summary: After a stinging 7-2 loss Tuesday to the Edmonton Oilers, the Blue Jackets made it their goal to come out energized right from the hop.
They accomplished that plus quite a bit more, scoring three goals to take a commanding lead after the first 20 minutes of the game.
Zach Werenski had a goal and assist, pushing his goal total to 10 for the season, just two shy of the franchise record for defenseman in one season. Artemi Panarin did what he always does now. He got the only assist on Werenski's goal, which for him was his seventh straight point off a primary assist.
Markus Nutivaara also got into the act, banging home a loose puck that was taken to the net by Wennberg, from below the goal line.
"I could've had 12 [goals for the season], but I missed the net a couple times in the first," Werenski said. "I think tonight's the perfect example of how we can score. It's been [32] games, and we haven't really had the offense going, but if we can get it going like we did tonight ad clean up some of those [defensive zone] plays - and a few of those were my fault - I think we're going to be in really good [shape] moving forward."
Second Twenty
Goals: NYI - Josh Bailey EV (John Tavares), 5:00; Casey Cizikas EV (Scott Mayfield, Calvin de Haan), 7:49; Bailey EV (Tavares, Anders Lee), 13:52; CBJ - Seth Jones EV (Cam Atkinson, Bjorkstrand), 15:03; Nick Foligno, delayed pen (Bjorkstrand, Wennberg), 17:52
Shots:Islanders 12, Blue Jackets 10
Shot-Attempts Percentage (Corsi 5v5):Islanders 56.8% (21-16), Blue Jackets 43.2% (16-21)
Scoring Chances 5v5: Islanders 12, Blue Jackets 9
High-Danger Chances 5v5: Islanders 8, Blue Jackets 5
Period summary:This time, the Islanders came out of the locker room buzzing. This time, it was the visiting team that scored three goals in a row, tying the game 3-3 on Cizikas' goal and two tallies by Bailey - who scored his his third and fourth in the past two games, all set up by Tavares.
New York controlled the puck more in the second middle 20, as well, but that wasn't the end of the story. The Blue Jackets had something left in the tank, as well.
They got up, dusted themselves off and threw a couple more haymakers of their own - retaking the lead, 5-3, on the late goals by Jones and Foligno - who scored as the extra attacker who came over the boards as the result of a penalty that would've been assessed to Alan Quine for boarding.
"You look at our first period, we were so tenacious down low and so quick out of our own end, so it didn't really give the Islanders much," Foligno said. "They pushed back, and we kind of slept a litte bit in the second, but we get right back to it at the end of the second and then, boom, we're right back all over them again."
Final Twenty
Goals: NYI - Bailey PP (Tavares), 7:11; CBJ - Josh Anderson EV-EN (unassisted), 19:59
Shots: Blue Jackets 9, Islanders 9
Shot-Attempts percentage (Corsi 5v5):Islanders 59.5% (22-15), Blue Jackets 40.5% (15-22)
Scoring chances 5v5: Islanders 15, Blue Jackets 9
High-Danger chances 5v5: Islanders 5, Blue Jackets 4
Period summary:It was New York's turn to show resilience in a game that had sweeping momentum swings each way. Once again, it was Bailey scoring for the Islanders. Once again, it was Tavares setting him up with a primary assist.
This one was the only assist, giving Tavares five such helpers in New back-to-back losses the past two days. It was Bailey's fifth point, after assisting on two goals Wednesday against the Dallas Stars, and it was another power-play goal - which are rarely scored by the opposition in this building, but have happened in each of the past two games here.
It was also not enough to catch the Blue Jackets, who staved off a fevered push to tie the game and finally sealed it on Anderson's empty-net goal with a second left.
"I think the [scoring] chances were about 27-27 ... safe is death," Tortorella said. "The way it went, you know, giving up the three and then we score two, and then they get their fourth one pretty early on there [in the third], I thought we handled ourselves well. That's a good win for us coming off a bit of a nightmare the game before."
Overall shots:Blue Jackets 35, Islanders 25
Overall Corsi:Islanders 50.9% (55-53), Blue Jackets 49.1% (53-55)
Overall 5v5 Scoring chances:Islanders 32, Blue Jackets 31
