This one was a grind.
After sinking a lot of effort into overcoming a 2-0 deficit Friday night in New Jersey, forging a 5-3 win against the New Jersey Devils, the Blue Jackets came into the finale of a back-to-back set Saturday night without a full tank.
The Arizona Coyotes hadn't played Friday, were hungry for an upset and were bolstered by the play of goalie Antti Raanta - who got back in net after missing time with an injury.
Columbus had plenty of reason to just accept exhaustion as an excuse and move onto next week, but instead the Jackets found a way to win, 1-0, at Nationwide Arena. They scored 30 seconds into the game on a goal by Josh Anderson - and another primary assist by Artemi Panarin, his sixth in two days - and made it stand up for a gritty victory.
"I really thought for us, those two [last] periods [in New Jersey] were important," Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella said. "Not only did we win the game, but I thought we played our game. It was the most physical we've been this year, and I just thought we came together. I don't think it was there tonight, but tonight was just a game where you could tell guys just didn't have much juice. So, to win two of them, winning in Jersey the way we did, and then come back and find a way to win [here], it certainly is important at this time of year."
The Jackets won with defense and goaltending. They won with a suffocating penalty kill and Sergei Bobrovsky, who made 35 saves and now leads the NHL with four shutouts.
Columbus won, because the Blue Jackets just keep finding ways to prevail in games like this, improving to 10-1-1 in one-goal games.
Here's how it happened:

First Twenty
(Corsi, scoring chance data per naturalstattrick.com)
Goals: ARZ - None; CBJ - Josh Andersion EV (Artemi Panarin, Pierre-Luc Dubois), 0:30.
Shots:Coyotes 11, Blue Jackets 10
Shot-Attempts percentage (Corsi 5v5):Blue Jackets 54.5% (18-15), Coyotes 45.5% (15-18)
Scoring chances 5v5: Blue Jackets 10, Coyotes 9
High-Danger chances 5v5: Blue Jackets 2, Coyotes 2
Period summary:It took Panarin exactly half a minute to pick up where he left off Friday in Newark, N.J.
His line generated yet another goal, this time scored by Josh Anderson on the first shift of the game, and Panarin got the primary assist - his sixth consecutive primary assist when including the five he tallied in a 5-3 win Friday against the New Jersey Devils.
The assist was initially credited to rookie Pierre-Luc Dubois, the center of the top line, but that was eventually changed to Panarin with the first helper and Dubois with the second.
"I think he's been really consistent all year round," Anderson said of Panarin. "He's been so dominant, and you can just see his compete level. He's so hard on pucks, and is so hard to knock off pucks, so it's definitely a good line right now and we're playing well."
That was the lone goal scored in the first, which included the Blue Jackets continuing to stifle opposing power plays. The Coyotes got a power play after Scott Harrington was called for interference, but Columbus - ranked first in the NHL in home penalty killing (95.2 percent) shut it down with another strong kill.
Bobrovsky was also sharp to start the game, playing both ends of the Jackets' eighth back-to-back this season.
Second Twenty
Goals: ARZ - None; CBJ - None.
Shots:Blue Jackets 15, Coyotes 11
Shot-Attempts percentage (Corsi 5v5):Blue Jackets 64.5% (20-11), Coyotes 35.5% (11-20)
Scoring chances 5v5: Blue Jackets 13, Coyotes 8
High-Danger chances 5v5: Blue Jackets 5, Coyotes 3
Period summary:Columbus dominated this period, but couldn't extend its lead before the 20 minutes were up.
The Blue Jackets outshot the Coyotes, took nearly 65 percent of all 5-on-5 shot attempts and almost doubled Arizona's scoring chances. They just couldn't put the puck past goalie Antti Raanta, who was sharp after Anderson beat him less than a minutes into the game.
Among Raanta's 15 saves were two stops each against Lukas Sedlak and Boone Jenner, and one against Anderson's wrist shot from the slot with 6:29 left.
Not to be outdone, Bobrovsky made some high-caliber saves of his own, including two against Brendan Perlini - the first on a tip midway through and the second off a breakaway late in the period.
"From right there [after the first goal], we thought we'd get a couple more," Anderson said, "but it was a goaltender's night tonight. Both of them played really well."
Final Twenty
Goals: ARZ - None; CBJ - None.
Shots:Coyotes 13, Blue Jackets 9
Shot-Attempts percentage (Corsi 5v5):Coyotes 64.3% (18-10), Blue Jackets 35.7% (10-18)
Scoring chances 5v5: Coyotes 7, Blue Jackets 6
High-Danger chances 5v5: Blue Jackets 3, Coyotes 3
Period summary:The Coyotes had their best 20 minutes of the game. They pushed the Blue Jackets to the brink, nearly tied it a couple times and then got a power play for the final 2:53 of the period.
That was courtesy of two minor penalties called on Panarin, who was called for hooking and high-sticking Coyotes top defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson on the same play.
Just as they usually do when shorthanded, the Jackets killed it off to close out the game, going 4-for-4 killing penalties to improve to 40-for-42 this season on home ice.
In the final 10 seconds, the Blue Jackets got two huge shot blocks - by David Savard and Matt Calvert - with the Arizona net empty for 6-on-4 advantage.
It was a just reward for Bobrovsky, who made three saves on the kill that preceded those blocks.
"'Bread' [Panarin] gave us an opportunity to work at it," Tortorella quipped. "It's offset some of our problems. It's been that good. As our power play has struggled, our penalty-killing has been that good. You hope it kind of evens the ledger out, and hopefully we'll get both of them going at the same time."
Overall shots:Coyotes 35, Blue Jackets 34
Overall Corsi:Blue Jackets 52.8% (48-44), Coyotes 47.8% (44-48)
Overall 5v5 Scoring chances:Blue Jackets 27, Coyotes 23
Overall High-Danger chances:Blue Jackets 10, Coyotes 8
