ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - Alex Friesen scored three goals and added an assist as the Niagara IceDogs opened the 2012 Ontario Hockey League playoffs with an impressive 8-2 victory over the Oshawa Generals.
Niagara takes a 1-0 series lead in the best-of-seven quarter-final.
Andrew Agozzino added one goal and three assists for the Eastern Conference top-ranked IceDogs.
Trevor Peterson, Ryan Strome, Tom Kuhnhackl and Brett Ritchie had the other Niagara goals.
Emerson Clark and Christian Thomas replied for eighth-seeded Oshawa, which was outshot 51-35.
The IceDogs entered the playoffs with the OHL's top ranked power play and their success continued in the post-season. Niagara went 5-for-8 with the man-advantage, while the Generals were 0-for-4.
Mark Visentin picked up the win in goal.
Oshawa started Kevin Bailie took the loss after allowing five goals on 18 shots in the first period. Bailie was pulled in favour of Daniel Altshuller, who made 30 saves on 33 shots over the final 40 minutes.
Game 2 goes Friday night in Oshawa, with Game 3 back in St. Catharines on Sunday.
