The Calgary Hitmen enjoy opening their WHL season against the Red Deer Rebels.

Brett Sonne scored once and added a pair of assists to lead the Hitmen to a 5-3 win over the Rebels in the season-opener for both teams. The Hitmen have faced the Rebels in each of their last six season-opening games, winning five of them. Calgary also extended its recent dominance over Red Deer, having won five of six meetings last season.

Trailing 2-0 after Friday's first period, the Hitmen (1-0-0-0) erupted for four power-play goals in the second period. Sonne, Ian Schultz, Brandon Kozun and Jason MacDonald all scored in the second, while Kyle Bortis chipped in with three assists.

Chase Schaber then added an insurance marker in the third period to go with an assist he recorded on Schultz's goal.

In other Western Hockey League action Friday, it was: Brandon 5 Regina 3; Medicine Hat 5 Edmonton 1; Swift Current 6 Moose Jaw 1; Lethbridge 4 Kootenay 3 (SO); Prince Albert 8 Saskatoon 2; Kamloops 4 Everett 3 (OT); and Prince George 5 Seattle 2.

At Calgary, Willie Coetzee and Brett Ferguson scored in the first period for the Rebels (0-1-0-0), while Tomas Polak counted a second-period marker.

Calgary's Dan Spence made 23 saves to record his 74th career win, tying Brent Krahn for most wins by a Hitmen goaltender. Red Deer goalie Darcy Kuemper stopped 27 of the 32 shots he faced at the other end.

Wheat Kings 5 Pats 3

At Brandon, Man., Brayden Schenn's short-handed goal with 3:36 left in the third period was the game winner as the Wheat Kings defeated Regina.

Andrew Clark added a pair of goals for Brandon (1-0-0-0), with Jay Fehr and Matt Lowry adding singles.

Victor Bartley, Matt Strueby and Scott Doucet replied for the Pats (0-1-0-0).

Tigers 5 Oil Kings 1

At Edmonton, Bretton Cameron scored the game winner early in the second period and added an assist as Medicine Hat routed the Oil Kings.

Colton Grant, Mark Isherwood, Zdenek Okal and Matthew Konan also had goals for the Tigers (1-0-0-0).

Jeff Lee had the lone goal for Edmonton (0-1-0-0).

Broncos 6 Warriors 1

At Moose Jaw, Alta., Cody Eakin's hat trick lifted Swift Current past the Warriors.

Jordan Peddle, Eric Doyle and Justin Dowling added singles for the Broncos (1-0-0-0).

Neal Prokop countered in a losing cause for Moose Jaw (0-1-0-0).

Hurricanes 4 Ice 3 (SO)

At Lethbridge, Alta., Carter Ashton scored in the third round of the shootout to lead the Hurricanes past Kootenay.

Mitch Versteeg, Craig Orfino and Adam Chorneyko scored for the Hurricanes (1-0-0-0).

Dominik Pacovsky, Tylan Stephens and Jesse Imond answered for the Ice (1-0-0-1).

Raiders 8 Blades 2

At Saskatoon, Andy Smith scored three goals as Prince Albert routed the Blades.

Matt Robertson, Justin Bernhardt, Jordan Kochan, Jordan Hickmott and Ryan McDonald also had goals for the Raiders (1-0-0-0).

Chris Langkow and Milan Kytnar answered for the Blades (0-1-0-0).

Blazers 4 Silvertips 3 (OT)

At Kamloops, B.C., Kenton Dulle scored 2:02 into overtime as the Blazers beat Everett.

C.J. Stretch, Shayne Wiebe and Scott Wasden also scored for Kamloops (1-0-0-0).

Paul Van de Velde, Matthew Ius and Shane Harper replied for Everett (0-0-1-0).

Cougars 5 Thunderbirds 2

At Prince George, B.C., Brett Connolly's game winner highlighted a three-goal second period that lifted the Cougars past Seattle.

Dale Hunt, Justin Maylan, Parker Stanfield and Dallas Jackson also scored for Prince George (1-0-0-0).

Jeremy Boyer scored twice to pace the Thunderbirds (0-1-0-0).
