Flyers aim to rebound against Rangers

by Dave Lozo /

FLYERS (2-4-0) at RANGERS (2-3-0)

Season series: This is the second of five meetings between the teams. The Flyers won 2-1 in Philadelphia on Thursday for their first win of the season.

Big story: Two teams expected to challenge for the Atlantic Division have had their problems coming out of the gate. The Flyers lost all six meetings to the Rangers last season, but they’d like to turn the tables this season in an effort to get themselves out of the bottom half of the East.

Team scope:

Flyers: All looked well again when the Flyers demolished the Panthers 7-1 on Friday night. But 24 hours later, the Flyers were on the wrong end of a blowout, a 5-1 loss to the Lightning.

"I don't know if it was so much them or if it was us," Flyers right wing Wayne Simmonds said. "We didn't get too many shots through. They blocked a lot of shots tonight. I think we could have been better. We didn't get anything going there."

Rangers: After a full week of foundering, the Rangers put forth their best 60 minutes of the season in a 5-2 comeback win against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday. They fell behind 2-0 after one period, but they continued to control the play before finally breaking through against goaltender James Reimer for four goals and an empty-netter

"I would say mentally it's good to put a win together here, but we need a couple to get us back to .500 and get us back to the top half of the conference here," Rangers defenseman Dan Girardi said. "We're going to take this now and enjoy it a bit here and know we have to keep on getting better. We're still not where we need to be. But I think for the most part tonight, we played a pretty solid 60 minutes."

Who's hot: Flyers goalie Ilya Bryzgalov, who was given the night off against Tampa Bay, has put together two straight strong starts. He has allowed two goals in two games, stopping 48 of 50 shots. … All the heat on the Rangers comes from the line of Marian Gaborik, Brad Richards and Rick Nash. As a group the past three games, they have 6 goals and 8 assists.

Injury report: The Flyers will be without defenseman Andrej Meszaros (shoulder) and Scott Hartnell (foot). .. Rangers rookie Chris Kreider (ankle) will miss this game, but wasn’t likely to be in the lineup if he was healthy.
