Flames claim D Mikkelson off waivers @NHLdotcom

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - The Calgary Flames have claimed defenseman Brendan Mikkelson off waivers from the Anaheim Ducks and assigned defenseman T.J. Brodie to the AHL's Abbotsford Heat.

Mikkelson has five assists and 38 penalty minutes in 67 NHL games. The smooth-skating defender was a second-round draft pick by Anaheim in 2005.

His sister, Meaghan Mikkelson, won an Olympic gold medal on Canada's hockey team in February. Their father, Bill, played for the New York Islanders and Washington Capitals in the 1970s.

Brodie, 20, led the Flames in preseason scoring with four goals and played in three regular-season games. But Calgary's defense is laden with veterans on one-way contracts.
