The Calgary Flames
began Saturday's action in possession of the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
By the end of the night, they could be in fourth.
It will be no easy task, but the Flames can leap into the No. 4 seed should they find a way to beat the Vancouver Canucks
-- the top team in the League with 97 points -- at Scotiabank Saddledome (10 p.m. ET, CBC).
Calgary has this opportunity due to a rare Saturday night off for the teams ahead of it in the standings, as Dallas, Chicago, Los Angeles and Phoenix are all idle. With a win, the Flames would leap all the way to fourth; an overtime or shootout loss would vault them to fifth and a regulation loss would keep them eighth.
The Anaheim Ducks
, who reside in ninth place in the West and trail Calgary by just two points, are also off on Saturday.
The Flames have dropped in the Western Conference standings on each of their six off days from Feb. 28 through March 11. They dropped two spots on an off-day Friday for the third time in that span.
