Troy Brouwer out week to week for Flames

Calgary Flames forward Troy Brouwer is out week to week after breaking his finger on Dec. 23.
"He's on the road to recovery," general manager Brad Treliving said Wednesday. "He had surgery here yesterday morning and is back on the mend here. Obviously, that's a hole here for us for the next little while."
Brouwer was injured when he was hit in the hand by a dump-in by teammate Kris Versteeg in a 4-1 win against the Vancouver Canucks. Brouwer has eight goals and nine assists (17 points) in 36 games in his first season with Calgary after signing as a free agent on July 1.

"He's such a great veteran presence," coach Glen Gulutzan said of the 31-year-old. "We're going to miss him on the penalty kill, for sure. I think he's an elite penalty-killer. He's just a heavy body that gives us a great net-front presence, gets his weight in the corner, and in games like tomorrow (against the Anaheim Ducks), he'll be a guy that's going to be missed, for sure."
Flames forward Johnny Gaudreau missed less than three weeks after having surgery on his broken finger on Nov. 17.
"With every injury comes opportunity for somebody else," Gulutzan said. "We've got guys here who have been chomping at the bit to play and they're going to get their chances now. They have to make the most of it. With that adversity comes opportunity. We just need other guys to step up and fill those roles."
