The Calgary Flames on Friday acquired restricted free-agent defenseman Kris Russell from the St. Louis Blues, in exchange for a 2014 fifth-round draft pick. The Flames then signed Russell to a one-year, $1.5 million contract.
Russell, 26, had one goal and six assists in 33 regular-season games with the Blues in 2012-13, while average 16:02 of ice time per game.
A native of nearby Red Deer, Alberta, Russell originally was drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the third round of the 2005 NHL Draft. In six seasons with the Blue Jackets and Blues, Russell has 23 goals and 72 assists in 364 games.
