CALGARY, Alberta (AP) -Calgary linemates Dustin Boyd and Chuck Kobasew scored goals and rookie Brent Khan made 36 saves to help the Flames beat the Florida Panthers 3-1 on Sunday night in the exhibition opener for both teams.
Carsen Germyn also scored for Calgary, playing its first game under new coach Jim Playfair. After four seasons as an assistant, Playfair was promoted during the summer when Darryl Sutter stepped down to concentrate on his general manager duties.
Ed Belfour, the 41-year-old goalie signed by Florida as a free agent, allowed the three goals on 14 shots before giving away to Jean-Marc Pelletier halfway through the second period. Pelletier stopped all 11 shots he faced.
Olli Jokinen scored for the Panthers.
Calgary veterans Jarome Iginla, Dion Phaneuf, Daymond Langkow, Tony Amonte and Robyn Regher did not play.
