What's it like to build an NHL team from scratch?
Current Golden Knights general manager George McPhee is the only NHL executive to have been given this opportunity since 2000.
Or looking at it from another perspective, McPhee is the only GM in history tasked with managing this sort of process in a salary cap era (2005-present).
McPhee began this process last July, when he was hired as the first GM in Vegas history. Since then, he's hired and deployed a hockey ops staff, relocated to Las Vegas and began shaping the on-ice identity of a franchise that will play its first regular-season game in October 2017.

McPhee recently gave a wide-ranging interview with NHL.com's Dan Rosen in which he discusses everything from his current projects, the past executives from whom he he sought counsel to what it's been like adjusting to life in a new city.
"We had a young fellow do a research project on it so we've looked at it in that way, in what might be the best way to do things and lessons learned," McPhee told Rosen. "But we've also met with Doug Risebrough GM of Minnesota Wild when they came into the NHL] to talk about his experience. We had a meeting in Las Vegas with Doug. And we are arranging a meeting with Bob Clarke based on his experience with expansion [GM of Florida Panthers when they came into the NHL]. There were a lot of good takeaways from the meeting with Doug."
