HELSINKI, Finland - Jakub Klepis scored in a shootout to lead the Czech Republic to a 2-1 win over Sweden in the opening round of the four-nation Sweden Hockey Games on Thursday.
Goalkeeper Ondrej Pavelec of the Atlanta Thrashers finished with 29 saves for the Czechs and stopped all three Swedish shooters in the shootout. Lukas Kaspar scored in regulation for the Czechs while Victor Hedman replied for Sweden.
In the other opening-day game, Finland edged Russia 5-4 in a shootout.
Juhamatti Aaltonen, Petri Kontiola and Granlund scored for the Finns in the shootout while Viktor Kozlov and Sergei Mozyakin replied for the Russians.
Aaltonen scored twice in regulation while Riku Hahl and Juuso Hietanen added singles. Mozyakin, Kozlov, Maxim Sushinsky and Evgeny Artyukhin all scored for Russia.
The tournament is the last serious test for European teams before the IIHF World Hockey Championship opens next week in Germany.
