Fantasy Spin: Parise Injury

by Matt Cubeta
While the Devils continue to receive bad news in 2010, fantasy owners everywhere also took a major hit on Tuesday. With the announcement of New Jersey forward Zach Parise being sidelined for the next three months, several fantasy teams will have to look for help elsewhere.

Parise, like most Devils players, was off to a sluggish start with just 3 goals, 3 assists, a minus-1 rating, 6 PIMs, 1 power play point and 47 shots on goal. Regardless, the highly talented winger was still considered an elite fantasy forward coming into the 2010-11 NHL season. He will be greatly missed by not only the New Jersey Devils, but all of his owners as well.

So what do you do now? For starters, stash Parise on your injured reserve list if possible. Secondly, go to the waiver wire and look for someone that shoots a ton, because you will certainly miss the guaranteed shots Parise used to give you. Obviously there won't be any comparable talent out there, but still, you should look for a guy that will fire the puck on goal as often as possible.

As far as who will be asked to fill the role for Parise on the Devils, look for Ilya Kovalchuk and Patrik Elias to step up their game in a big way. While the lines are unclear (as they usually are in New Jersey), Kovy and Elias will be relied on scoring even more than they were previously. The Devils' top six forwards should now look like this: Kovalchuk, Elias, Zajac, Langenbrunner, Arnott and Zubrus.
