In my Extra Shift column after last night's game, I mentioned that the two most important takeaways from the Lightning's shootout win over Washington were that a) they picked up two points (after having lost four straight in regulation) and b) they defended well, reversing a troubling trend that had been a big problem area during the losing skid.
It's never pleasant to stomach a loss - even in OT or the shootout - but the Lightning did earn one point from this game in Carolina. And they produced another solid defensive performance. So while the Bolts would have loved to get the second point, the one point gained and the defensive effort are (again) two important takeaways from this contest.

The circumstances entering this game were tough ones for the Lightning and Hurricanes. Both teams were playing the second half of a back-to-back and completing a stretch of five games in eight days (with extensive travel). Both clubs deserve credit for digging deep and grinding their way through this game. There weren't many pretty plays made (on either side), but the compete level was pretty high, particularly in the defensive zone. The teams combined to kill nine penalties. Both clubs boxed out well in front of their goalies to prevent dangerous rebound opportunities. And while there weren't a lot of Grade-A scoring chances, both goalies made key saves when they needed to.
Ultimately, the game came down to one play and Phil Di Giuseppe netted the winner early in overtime. As he skated towards Ben Bishop at the right circle, Bishop's goalie stick got tied up with defenseman Anton Stralman. So his stick was out of position when DiGiuseppe shot. The puck went right where Bishop's stick would normally be - and through his pads into the net.
The Lightning now lead the league in road games played (16). After opening the season with four consecutive home games, they've played 16 of the next 23 on the road. It's been an intense, difficult stretch. The road schedule won't really lighten up until the team returns from Western Canada later this month. But at least the Bolts get to spend next week at home. They'll have three days to prepare for Vancouver, which visits Amalie Arena on Thursday.
