Expansion Draft Primer: What's Exclusive Free Agency?

Exclusive free agent negotiation, extra time to make Expansion Draft choices possible for June

by Dan Marrazza @GoldenKnights /

The last two weeks of June are shaping up to be a doozy for the Golden Knights.

June 18-20: The Golden Knights are expected to receive other teams' protected lists and be able to begin choosing players in the Expansion Draft.

June 21: All 30 of Vegas' Expansion Draft selections will be announced.

June 23-24: The Golden Knights will participate in the team's first Entry Draft.

Factoring in that NHL free agency will then begin on July 1, the early part of this summer is shaping up as one of the most consequential time periods in franchise history.

Exiting early March's general manager meetings in Boca Raton, Fla., George McPhee was able to provide some clarity on how the week prior to this onslaught is also shaping up to be significant for the Golden Knights.

Expansion Draft Primer: Rules Will Breed Competition

How the Expansion Draft rules will produce a hyper-intense training camp this fall

by Dan Marrazza @GoldenKnights /

The math of it doesn't seem to add up.

Except that it does.

The Vegas Golden Knights will select 30 players in the NHL Expansion Draft. But NHL rosters consist of only 23 players.

Based on this premise, that arithmetic of how the Golden Knights will construct the team's roster doesn't seem to compute.

After all, if our team selects 30 players, but can only carry 23 on our roster, what happens to the other seven players?

Likewise, if our team signs free agents, wouldn't that muddy the waters even further? Where if the Golden Knights sign six free agents, for example, and then have 36 players, wouldn't the limitations of a 23-man roster misplace 13 of our players?

Here are a few things to keep in mind as the Golden Knights participate in the Expansion Draft this June about how the relationship works between the amount of players we select and the amount we carry on our roster.

Expansion Draft Primer: What Positions Do We Select?

Of Vegas' 30 picks in the Expansion Draft, the team is mandated to select a certain amount of players from every position

by Dan Marrazza @GoldenKnights /

When hockey teams conduct drafts, the modus operandi is more often than not to select the best player available, regardless of position.

Where even if a team is badly in need of a goaltender, for example, it probably won't select a goaltender in the NHL Entry Draft if a center who they feel is better than the goaltender is available.

Expansion Draft Primer: Who Can Teams Protect?

NHL teams will have two options of how many players they can protect from the Golden Knights in the Expansion Draft

by Dan Marrazza @GoldenKnights /

Leading up to the NHL Expansion Draft in June, will be providing a weekly primer to better explain the rules.

So many choices. So little time.

If there was ever a theme to the NHL Expansion Draft for the Golden Knights, this would be it.

After all, while most NHL rosters (23 players) typically add or replace 4-5 players per year, Vegas will almost entirely be stocking its roster during a two-day span.

This will happen during the Expansion Draft, which takes place from June 18-20. Vegas' selections will be announced on June 21.
