Coyotes will turn the spotlight on young talent

The Coyotes have a lot of work in front of them, but with a new general manager in Don Maloney running the show in the desert and Wayne Gretzky going into his third season behind the bench, Phoenix fans should know their franchise is in able hands.

Maloney spent the better part of the last decade learning from Glen Sather in the Rangers’ front office and his first order of business with the Coyotes is to change the losing culture that’s suffocated the team the last few years. Gretzky will likely have a younger group this season than he’s had as the Coyotes go into the season touting the youth movement so popular around the League. Like many unsuccessful teams, the Coyotes will give high draft picks an opportunity to start making an impact this season, a new generation they hope can usher a new hockey landscape.

But the Coyotes also will rely on a few savvy veterans like Shane Doan and Ed Jovanovski to make quick learners of those young players and instill a fresh, new work ethic. Maloney has set a goal for his new club to make the playoffs as early as this season, but with an improved Western Conference all around them, the task will not be easy.

The Coyotes definitely have their work cut out for them.
