Stars stay the course with veteran core

The Dallas Stars were not as active in the free-agent market as some of their division and conference rivals, which caused some alarm within the passionate fan base. The clamoring for a high-priced free agent led Stars President Jim Lites to ask for patience in a public plea as he explained the Stars’ philosophy.

Basically, Lites said the Stars were not going to overpay for players, and they stuck to their word this summer adding only role players like Todd Fedoruk and Brad Winchester, while losing regulars like Ladislav Nagy and Darryl Sydor on the open market.

The way Lites tells it, Dallas is a franchise that will lean heavily on their veteran core, a tactic that’s worked wonders in Detroit, where there has been little turnover in the last decade.

Dallas is a team that feels the pieces are already in place, led by Mike Modano, who will try to become the NHL’s all-time American-born scoring leader early in the season. Veteran holdovers like Brenden Morrow, Jere Lehtinen and Marty Turco will again be the heartbeat of the franchise, which has been among the most successful in the NHL over the last decade.

There’s no reason to think, even after a quiet free agent summer, Dallas won’t continue that trend this season.
