Ducks now on the most wanted list

As of the beginning of September, Anaheim Ducks General Manager Brian Burke had no idea if two future Hall of Fame players would be dressing for the Ducks this season. Burke says Teemu Selanne and Scott Niedermayer, who were both contemplating retirement, earned the right to take their time with making such lofty decisions.

As such, Burke went into the summer with the mentality that those two vital cogs in last year’s Stanley Cup season would not be returning. It was business as usual. Burke re-tooled the Ducks’ lineup thinking that those two would not be back, going about the summer free-agency period in what he termed a “safety net” mode, adding guys like Todd Bertuzzi and Mathieu Schneider in an effort to keep his team competitive with or without the unrestricted Selanne or Niedermayer, who still has two years left on his contract.

The defending Stanley Cup champs come into the 2007-08 season with targets on their backs and a slightly different team than the one they dressed a season ago. Niedermayer and Selanne may or may not be back. Dustin Penner’s gone to Edmonton. But while some of the faces may be different, the Ducks will play the same hard, physical style they did last season. They’ll continue to develop a prized crop of young, battle-tested players and there’s no reason why they should not be counted among the Western Conference elite going into this season.
