After doubling the Hurricanes on shots for most of the game, the Jets finally put a few in the net in the third period.
Until then, nothing Winnipeg tried seemed to get past Hurricanes goaltender Brian Boucher. The veteran goaltender made 35 saves over three periods.
Boucher stopped 15 shots in the first two periods.
Kane was the first to give Jets fans something to cheer about at 10:45 in the third on a power play with a shot that was partially screened.
Wheeler scored his first of the pre-season about a minute later.
Carolina got their first and only goal on a giveaway in the second period on a line change.
Brent scored the first goal of the game just 54 seconds into the second period when he grabbed the puck near centre on a line change and beat Winnipeg goaltender Chris Mason one-on-one.
Mason stopped 17 shots to earn the win.
Carolina went 0-for-5 on the power play, while the Jets were 1-for-6.
Three Manitobans were playing Wednesday night for their chance to stay in the big league ??? forwards Jason Gregoire and Troy Bodie and defenceman Derek Meech. A fourth, Winnipeg native Kevin Clark, has already been sent down to the Jets' farm team in St. John's.
