ERIE, Pa. - The Erie Otters scored eight goals on their final 25 shots to down the Owen Sound Attack 8-2 in Ontario Hockey League play Wednesday.
Mike Cazzola's hat trick, Greg McKegg's four assists and Derek Holden's two goals and an assist led the way for the Otters.
Shawn Szydlowski (goal, assist), Andrew Yogan (goal, assist) and Zack Torquato (two assists) had two points apiece. Szydlowski extended his career-high point streak to 10 games.
Erie (30-24-7) has won nine of its last 12 games to remain tied for fifth in the Western Conference standings with Sault Ste. Marie. The Attack, which is battling Guelph for the conference's final playoff spot, fell to 26-29-7.
The Attack greeted Erie goaltender Adam Courchaine, who had two shutouts in three games last week, by taking a 1-0 lead 4:47 into the first period. Myles Doan pushed a rebound past Courchaine for the goal.
The Otters outshot the Attack 12-7 in the period. But Erie couldn't solve Owen Sound goaltender Scott Stajcer.
However, the Otters' fortunes changed in the second period. Holden scored on the power play 4:22 into the period to tie the score at 1-1.
Then after the Attack's Garrett Wilson snapped the tie on the man advantage at the 8:15 mark, Cazzola deflected Holden's point shot past Stajcer - Cazzola's 30th goal of the season - to tie the score at 2-2 with 7:56 left in the period.
Less than two minutes later, Yogan scored on assists from Anthony Luciani and Szydlowski to hand the Otters a 3-2 lead.
Cazzola added his second goal 53 seconds into the third for a 4-2 lead. Szydlowski followed with his 18th goal of the season for a 5-2 lead with 10:20 left.
The Otters then capped the third period with three goals in the final 10 minutes.
