SAN JOSE -- Joakim Ryan scored the first two goals of his NHL career, including the game-winner late in the third period, to lift the San Jose Sharks to a 6-4 victory against the Edmonton Oilers at SAP Center on Saturday.
Ryan put his own rebound past Oilers goalie Al Montoya with 2:27 remaining to give San Jose a 5-4 lead. Joe Pavelski, who had four points, scored his second goal of the game into an empty net with 1:12 left.

Ryan, a rookie defenseman, had seven assists through his first 45 games this season.
"Forty-five games in you start to think about it a little -- is it ever going to happen?" Ryan said. "It's definitely nice to get that first one, and getting that second was even better."

Barclay Goodrow and Tomas Hertl also scored, and Aaron Dell made 27 saves for the Sharks (29-18-8), who moved into second place in the Pacific Division, one point ahead of the Los Angeles Kings.
The Sharks built a 3-0 lead early in the second period, but Edmonton rallied to score the next four goals, including three in the second.
"It was kind of a weird game," Sharks forward Logan Couture said. "They tried to give it to us in the first and we gave it right back to them in the second. It seemed like no one wanted to win. Way too many mistakes by guys who shouldn't be making them and they end up in the back of our net."
Zack Kassian scored twice, and Leon Draisaitl and Brandon Davidson each had one goal for the Oilers (23-27-4), who lost their third straight. Montoya made 24 saves.
"This game has been the story of the year," Kassian said. "We can't sustain any momentum once we get it for any length of time. We're not going to give up, but at the same time I'm not happy about clawing back and then watching the team fall back. Everyone is frustrated."
Davidson gave Edmonton a 4-3 lead at 1:21 of the third period, putting a rebound past Dell. Hertl tied it 4-4 at 3:41, lifting a backhand from the low slot into the upper-right corner.
The Sharks took a 1-0 lead at 1:15 of the first period when Ryan scored his first NHL goal on a wrist shot from the left point. Ryan's father, Bill, was in San Jose, along with many of the Sharks fathers, but he missed the game.

"My dad got sick before the game so he wasn't able to make it to the game," Ryan said. "But he's going to meet us in Anaheim tomorrow if he feels better. But maybe he should stay home more often."
Pavelski's 13th goal of the season at 7:21 made it 2-0. Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse's pass banked off the referee's skate and into the side of Edmonton's net. Pavelski got to the loose puck and beat Montoya from close range.
It was the sixth time in the past seven games the Oilers fell behind 2-0.
"It was a case of trying not to fall behind in the beginning, but we worked our way back in the second and the third only to see us give them the puck in those last minutes of the game, and they scored," Oilers coach Todd McLellan said. "It was good that we had some fortitude to come back and push in the game."
Goodrow made it 3-0 at 2:30 of the second period. He forced a turnover, got the puck back from Jannik Hansen on a rush and beat Montoya from the left circle.
Kassian cut the lead to 3-1 at 8:49, shooting wide on a breakaway but knocking the rebound off the boards past Dell.
Kassian scored on a breakaway at 14:20, beating Dell with a backhand to make it 3-2. Draisaitl scored from the slot on an Oscar Klefbom rebound at 18:02 to tie it 3-3.

They said it

"It's tough when you start a game and you're in a hole. We made poor decisions and we didn't come to play. Once we got our feet going in the second we did OK and we were headed in the right direction. Those couple of mistakes at the end were really disappointing." -- Oilers defenseman Brandon Davidson
"The one thing about this group is they don't get down on themselves. That fourth goal could have been backbreaking to a lot of groups, but there's a lot of resiliency here."-- Sharks coach Peter DeBoer
