Shorthanded goal lifts Kings past Oilers

LOS ANGELES -- Jeff Carter, Derek Forbort and Tyler Toffoli each had a goal and an assist to help the Los Angeles Kings defeat the Edmonton Oilers 4-2 at Staples Center on Thursday.
Devin Setoguchi also scored for Los Angeles (8-9-1), and Peter Budaj made 28 saves.
Darnell Nurse and Oscar Klefbom scored for the Oilers (9-8-1), who have lost five in a row. Jonas Gustavsson made 21 saves.

The Oilers were able to come back to tie it after allowing two early goals, but the Kings quickly took back the lead and never relinquished it.
Edmonton coach Todd McLellan said he's troubled by the trend of poor starts during the losing streak.
"It seems to vary from night to night positionally," McLellan said. "Whether it's a D-man with a turnover, the forwards coughing something up and not getting in position at the right time. It's certainly something we're aware of, we're concerned with, and trying to fix."
Carter scored a shorthanded goal to make it 3-2 at 9:06 of the second period. Twenty-six seconds after the Oilers tied the game, Kings forward Jordan Nolan was penalized for interference. Carter won a defensive-zone faceoff, and Toffoli took it down ice and passed back to Carter, who scored his sixth of the season.
"We didn't get the save, but there were other mistakes on it," McLellan said. "I thought it sucked the life out of us for a little bit."

Forbort scored his second NHL goal, first of the season, at 5:09 of the first period. Toffoli made it 2-0 at 7:42, tapping in Carter's centering pass.
Nurse made it 2-1 with a shot off the crossbar 3:44 into the second period. The Oilers kept pressuring and scored at 8:32 when Klefbom lifted a backhand from the slot off the crossbar to the tie it 2-2.
Setoguchi knocked in a rebound at 13:15 of the third period to make it 4-2. Forbort had an assist for his second multipoint game this season.
"I didn't think we were that good in the first couple of periods," Setoguchi said. "Then, in the third, we had a couple good shifts back to back and we were able to score on one."
Kings captain Anze Kopitar missed a third game with an upper-body injury.

Goal of the game

Forbort scored on a long shot through traffic to give the Kings a 1-0 lead and put the Oilers on their heels. "There was a bunch of traffic down there, [Kyle] Clifford made a good play, and I was lucky it went in," Forbort said.

Save of the game

With the Oilers trailing 3-2, Milan Lucic nearly scored a game-tying goal against his former team, but Budaj slid out of his crease and gloved the shot from the high slot at the 11:53 of the third period.

Unsung moment of the game

Forbort started the play that Setoguchi finished off by taking his time and picking his spot with a shot from the edge of the left faceoff circle. The shot drew Gustavsson out of the net, allowing Setoguchi to sweep in the rebound.

Highlight of the game

Carter and Toffoli's 2-on-1 rush went nearly the length of the ice and was capped off by Carter's lightning-quick wrist shot past Gustavsson from the edge of the left circle.

The Kings extended their home winning streak against the Oilers to 10 games. They haven't lost to Edmonton at Staples Center since Nov. 3, 2011. … Carter had his Kings-high fourth multipoint game of the season. His 13 points lead Los Angeles, and he's three points from 600 in his NHL career. … Carter's shorthanded goal was the second by the Kings this season and first for Carter since Nov. 20, 2015, at the Detroit Red Wings. … Oilers center Connor McDavid has gone 10 games without a goal.
