Toffoli scores twice to lift Flames past Oilers

CALGARY --Tyler Toffoli scored two goals, and the Calgary Flames extended their home point streak to 13 games with a 3-1 win against the Edmonton Oilers at Scotiabank Saddledome on Monday.

Toffoli has scored five goals in his past five games and 10 points (seven goals, three assists) in 10 games since being acquired from the Montreal Canadiens on Feb. 14.
Johnny Gaudreau had a goal and an assist for the Flames (34-14-7), who are 12-0-1 during the point streak and haven't lost in regulation at home since Jan. 13. Jacob Markstrom made 27 saves for his 10th win in his past 12 starts.
"It was just a really important game for us," Toffoli said. "And I thought we did a good job of containing their top guys and, obviously, 'Marky' made some big saves at the right time. I thought we just did a really good job overall in not really letting them get to their game as much as they probably wanted to."

Devin Shore scored, and Mikko Koskinen made 26 saves for the Oilers (30-23-4), who have lost three in a row and six of their past eight games.
"I think if we start looking at the standings, that would not be the way to go," Shore said. "I think we're trying to build something as a group and the way we want to play, and I think that needs to be our focus and let results be a byproduct of that. A lot of games left. We're over the halfway mark, but I think if we start looking at the playoff picture, I don't think that's a recipe for success right now."
Toffoli put Calgary up 1-0 at 6:27 of the second period with a power-play goal. Matthew Tkachuk tried to pull the puck between his legs for a shot, but he didn't connect and Toffoli shot the loose puck past Koskinen's glove.
The goal came after Markstrom made a blocker save on Brad Malone from the slot at 2:37 off a cross-ice pass by Colton Sceviour.
Toffoli scored again to make it 2-0 at 9:54, skating in on his off wing before shooting a one-timer from the left circle.
"When you look at the goals he scores, too, it's not one position or the same goal," Markstrom said. "He's a goal-scorer, and it's nice to have him on our team."

Shore cut the lead to 2-1 at 4:57 of the third period when he scored on a rebound after Markstrom made the initial save on Derek Ryan. It was his first goal since Dec. 31 (22 games).
"I don't think it's ever a question of competing or battle level," Edmonton forward Leon Draisaitl said. "We're playing our hearts out, but if you score one goal, you're not going to win very many games."
Gaudreau gave the Flames a 3-1 lead at 17:07 when he deked to his forehand and tucked the puck in on a breakaway. He has scored in three straight games and has nine points (three goals, six assists) during a five-game point streak.

Calgary held Draisaitl and Connor McDavid without a point and just four shots on goal. The two forwards combined for five goals and seven assists in the first two games this season, both won by the Oilers.
"When you play those kind of players, it's a full team effort by everyone that's on the ice, five guys plus myself, and then our penalty kill was huge (4-for-4). They get a lot of points there," Markstrom said. "There was some huge blocks and nice clears, and we didn't give them a lot of room on the power play or 5-on-5."
NOTES: Koskinen is 7-1-2 in his past 10 starts. His last loss in regulation was Jan. 20. … Flames forward Adam Ruzicka had an assist and one shot on goal in 8:07 of ice time after being a healthy scratch the past four games. … The Flames are 27-0-2 when leading after two periods. ... Elias Lindholm had an assist on Gaudreau's goal to extend his point streak to five games (four goals, five assists). ... Oilers defenseman Evan Bouchard and goalie Mike Smith did not play because of a non-COVID illness. Stuart Skinner was recalled from Bakersfield of the American Hockey League and served as the backup.
