McDavid lifts Oilers to 3-2 win

BUFFALO --Connor McDavid scored twice to set an NHL career high in points, and the Edmonton Oilers defeated the Buffalo Sabres 3-2 at KeyBank Center on Monday.

McDavid, who also extended his point streak to 11 games (12 goals, 15 assists), has 124 points (54 goals, 70 assists) in 65 games, one more than he had in 80 games last season.
"He's the best player in the world and he's pushing his own boundaries, personal bests in those categories," Edmonton forward Zach Hyman said. "He's driving the bus. He's been driving the bus for a long time and continues to get better."
Derek Ryan also scored, and Stuart Skinner made 37 saves for the Oilers (35-22-8), who have won three of four.
Edmonton is tied for third in the Pacific Division with the Seattle Kraken, who have played two fewer games.
"I thought Stuart played a very good game for us," Oilers coach Jay Woodcroft said. "He gave us a chance to win the game. You've got to give credit to the other team too. They have a lot of skill there. They're going to get their looks, and when you get your looks, you've got to make sure that your goaltender is there for you. And Stuart was there for us tonight. He gave us a chance to win."

EDM@BUF: McDavid nets opening goal with wraparound

Jeff Skinner and Dylan Cozens scored for the Sabres (32-26-4), who have lost three of four. Craig Anderson made 34 saves.
Buffalo remained three points behind the Pittsburgh Penguins for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Eastern Conference.
"We had lots of looks," Sabres coach Don Granato said. "We missed the net quite a few times, too, on some point-blank chances that now, after the fact, it's very frustrating, because that turned out to be the difference in the game. We generated more than enough to win that game."
McDavid gave the Oilers a 1-0 lead at 7:21 of the first period, scoring on a wraparound after Ryan McLeod's initial shot hit off the end boards.
Skinner tied it 1-1 with a power-play goal at 9:45, one-timing a cross-ice pass from Tage Thompson in the right face-off circle.
"As a team, we were confident, we were ready to play today," Buffalo forward Casey Mittelstadt said. "I feel like the boys were loose and ready to go before the game. I was happy with our start. … We had a ton of chances in the first. Honestly, it was one of those games where we had so many chances, we were just waiting for them to go in. It just didn't happen tonight."
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins appeared to put the Oilers ahead at 5:32 of the second period, but the Sabres challenged the play for offside, and the call was reversed after a video review.
However, Ryan did give Edmonton a 2-1 lead at 18:45 when he scored through traffic from the slot.
Cozens scored 41 seconds into the third period to tie it 2-2, settling a bouncing puck before spinning and beating Skinner short side from the left circle.
"I think the [defenseman] got back and kind of forced me to do that (spin) if I wanted to get a shot off, and I just tried to put it on net and it found its way in," Cozens said.

EDM@BUF: McDavid tallies his 2nd goal of the game

McDavid responded for the Oilers to make it 3-2 at 3:23, shooting five-hole on Anderson from the left circle.
"We talk a lot about momentum shifts, and that's an area as a team we want to get better at," Woodcroft said. "I would say this, you're going to Connor, and that's the finish. … There's a lot of good plays that led to that finish, and the finish was all world."
NOTES: It was McDavid's 250th multipoint NHL game. He is the fourth player in Oilers history to reach the milestone, joining Wayne Gretzky (472), Mark Messier (300) and Jari Kurri (296). … Only two other players since 2000-01 have had more than 124 points in a single season: Nikita Kucherov (128 with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2018-19) and Joe Thornton (125 with the Boston Bruins and San Jose Sharks in 2005-06). … Edmonton forward Leon Draisaitl's 12-game point streak ended. … Thompson has 83 points (42 goals, 41 assists) in 62 games this season, the most by a Sabres player since 2006-07 (Daniel Briere, 95; Thomas Vanek, 84). … Skinner has 13 points (seven goals, six assists) in his past 10 games. … Forward Jordan Greenway had one shot and three hits in 12:07 of ice time in his Sabres debut. He was acquired in a trade with the Minnesota Wild on Friday.
