5 Reasons: Why the Penguins advanced

Clutch Crosby, Rust's emergence helped Penguins reach Stanley Cup Final

by Wes Crosby / NHL.com Correspondent

PITTSBURGH -- After seven years, the Pittsburgh Penguins are returning to the Stanley Cup Final.

With a 2-1 win against the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Final at Consol Energy Center on Thursday, Pittsburgh earned a chance to win the Stanley Cup for the fourth time.

But in a series when the Lightning were without goalie Ben Bishop and captain Steven Stamkos for most of it, some doubt surrounded the Penguins. But that feeling did not seem to creep into the locker room.

Penguins adjusted, became sum of their parts

Moving on to Stanley Cup Final against Sharks thanks to in-season changes to personnel, style

by Dan Rosen @drosennhl / NHL.com Senior Writer

PITTSBURGH -- Sidney Crosby's stall in the Pittsburgh Penguins dressing room, located at the top of a three-quarters oval, is situated in such a way so he can see everything and everyone. It's the perfect position for the captain of a team, the leader of a room, the face of a franchise.

Crosby sat there late Thursday, after the Penguins finished off the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1 in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Final to book a date with the San Jose Sharks in the Stanley Cup Final. He sat there looking near and far and side to side at the commotion going on around him, at the media members moving back and forth, wave after wave of them going up to his teammates for sound bites and quotes and information about how they got it done.

PITTSBURGH -- The emotions were still too raw for Steven Stamkos to ponder what comes next for him.

The Tampa Bay Lightning captain had worked so hard and endured so much to get back in time to play in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Final on Thursday, and there was a lot for him to digest after the season-ending 2-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins. A question about whether he had considered that this might have been his final game as a member of the Lightning produced a curt reply.

"No," Stamkos said.
