Tampa Bay rebounds from back-to-back losses with best effort of Eastern Conference Final

by Tom Gulitti @tomgulittinhl / NHL.com Staff Writer

TAMPA - Prior to taking the ice for Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Final on May 13, Tampa Bay Lightning coach Jon Cooper addressed his players about the opportunity in front of them in the series against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

"It's conference finals," Cooper told the Lightning in a speech captured by Showtime's cameras for the debut episode of its "ALL ACCESS: Quest for the Stanley Cup" series. "Teams don't get here by fluke. You didn't fluke your way here, fellas. You earned your way here. Treat it like that."

Daley's status unknown for Game 5, series

Penguins defenseman leaves arena on crutches after injury against Lightning

by Dan Rosen @drosennhl / NHL.com Senior Writer

TAMPA -- Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Trevor Daley was seen leaving Amalie Arena on crutches Friday, the result of an injury sustained in the second period of a 4-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Final.

Daley was checked into the end boards on a shoulder-to-shoulder hit by Lightning forward Ryan Callahan with 9:27 left in the period. It was unclear exactly how Daley was injured, but he went down in a heap, stayed down, tried to get up but couldn't, and shuffled on his knees to the front of the net as play continued around him until a whistle blew when Sidney Crosby touched the puck 20 seconds later.

Johnson's tip-in goal

PIT@TBL, Gm4: Johnson scores off Kucherov's feed

ECF, Gm4: Nikita Kucherov makes a great pass across the crease, and Tyler Johnson deflects the puck into the net for a four-goal lead

  • 01:15 •

TAMPA -- When Tampa Bay Lightning coach Jon Cooper heard that center Tyler Johnson had been hit in the mouth by a puck during warmups before Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Final on Friday at Amalie Arena, it would have been understandable if he thought, "Here we go again."

The Lightning were already missing captain Steven Stamkos because of a blood clot and No. 1 goaltender Ben Bishop because of a left leg injury; defenseman Anton Stralman recently returned from a fractured left fibula. Adding Johnson to their list of injured top players would have been par for the course for the Lightning.
