Dziurzynski leads Wheat Kings past Hitmen 6-2; Brandon leads playoff series 1-0

CALGARY - The Brandon Wheat Kings scored four unanswered goals Thursday to rout the Calgary Hitmen 6-2 to open their first-round Western Hockey League playoff series.

Darian Dziurzynski scored twice for Brandon, while Mark Stone, Jason Swyripa, Michael Ferland and Alessio Bertaggia added singles. Corbin Boes made 34 saves.

Game 2 of the best-of-seven Eastern Conference quarter-final is in Calgary on Friday.

Brooks Macek and Alex Gogolev replied for the Hitmen.

For the second straight season the Wheat Kings have opened the playoffs with an extended road trip.

The Royal Winter Fair will keep them out of the Keystone Centre for the opening round. Games 3, 4 and possibly Game 5 will be played at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg before the teams return to Alberta for Games 6 and 7.
