Dowd played for 10 different teams over 17 NHL seasons, including three-plus with the Devils, one with the Flyers and one with the Islanders.
"Hockey in New Jersey has grown so much over the last 15-20 years," Dowd said. "I was born and raised here, and there are so many more youth programs now. When I was growing up, there were 12 or 14 and now there are 33, and I know because my kids are playing. It's amazing to see how hockey has grown in the state."
Among those in attendance will be Philadelphia Flyers
forward James van Riemsdyk
, who was named Monmouth County MVP of this event back in 2004 when he played for Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft, N.J. Also in attendance will be Stanley Cup-winning assistant coach Mike Haviland of the Chicago Blackhawks
. The Middletown, N.J. native never missed the playoffs during his seven-year minor league coaching career, which included capturing the East Coast Hockey League's Kelly Cup in 2003 with the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies and in 2005 with the Trenton Titans. He'll enter his third season as an assistant with the Blackhawks this fall.
