NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -Brendan Shanahan is back for another season in the NHL.

The 40-year-old forward signed a one-year deal with the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday, keeping him with the team that drafted him second overall in 1987.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Shanahan will be entering his 22nd NHL season, after rejoining the Devils in January and recording six goals and eight assists in 34 regular-season games.

The two-time Olympian and eight-time All-Star has 656 goals and 698 assists in 1,524 games with New Jersey, St. Louis, Hartford, Detroit and the New York Rangers. He also has 60 goals and 74 assists in 184 playoff games.

Devils GM Lou Lamoriello called Shanahan a "veteran who can play in all situations, and accepts any role to help the team win."
