Devils' Madden hit in face with puck, leaves game @NHLdotcom

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -New Jersey center John Madden was hit in the face by a shot in the first period of the Devils' game against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Sunday and had to leave the game.

Madden put his stick down to deflect a power-play shot by Lightning forward Eric Perrin and the puck deflected and hit him in the right side of his face, opening a cut.

One of the NHL's best defensive forwards, Madden went down immediately and was on the ice, holding his face. He stayed down for about 20 seconds and skated off the ice, helped initially by a Devils' trainer and then referee Kerry Fraser and linemate Jay Pandolfo.

There was no immediate word on the injury.
