Forward Patrik Elias may not be able to play when the New Jersey Devils open their season against the Winnipeg Jets on Oct. 9 because of a knee injury.
Elias, 39, will not play in the preseason, Devils coach John Hynes told Northjersey.com on Thursday.
"That's why it's really up in the air," Hynes said. "We'll probably know more in two or three days where he's going to be at for the beginning of the season, but (for the) preseason he's not going to be available.
"[The season opener is] still to be decided. I'll probably know a few days from now a little bit better."
Elias, who has played 1,224 NHL games, all with the Devils, had 13 goals and 34 points in 69 games last season. He is New Jersey's all-time leading scorer with 406 goals and 1,017 points.
Hynes said Elias has skated a bit on his own, but the Devils aren't planning on rushing him back.
