DET@WSH: Larkin whips home wrister for OT winner

WASHINGTON -- Dylan Larkin scored 1:37 into overtime, and the Detroit Red Wings rallied to defeat the Washington Capitals 3-2 at Capital One Arena on Wednesday.

Adam Erne had a goal and an assist and Robby Fabbri also scored for Detroit (4-2-1), which trailed 2-0 in the second period. Thomas Greiss made 26 saves.
Larkin beat Vitek Vanecek with a wrist shot from the left circle for the game-winner.
"It shows a lot of character," Erne said of the comeback. "[That's] a highly-skilled team with a lot of big names, and we just stuck with it, stuck to the game plan and eventually it paid off."
Alex Ovechkin scored to extend his season-opening point streak to seven games (eight goals, five assists) for Washington (4-0-3). Evgeny Kuznetsov scored, and Vanecek made 22 saves.
Washington extended its season-opening point streak to seven games but fell to 0-3 in overtime, all at home.
"We have to do a better job at managing the puck [in overtime]. The whole thing is about puck possession," Capitals coach Peter Laviolette said. "It ends in an odd-man rush usually. This was not transition [goal] since we had people back, but nonetheless it is not getting done."
Ovechkin gave the Capitals a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 19:05 of the first period. Greiss made a pad save on his attempt from the right of the crease but Ovechkin, down on one knee, controlled the rebound and lifted the puck over Greiss.
"It's unbelievable. I think he just gets hungrier and hungrier, honestly," linemate Tom Wilson said of Ovechkin. "This year he just seems hungrier on the net, he's shooting the puck a ton, he's getting good looks and making the most of them. When he's playing like that you just want to get it over to him and he's finding the back of the net."
Kuznetsov made it 2-0 at 4:00 of the second period when got to a loose puck after a faceoff and shot between Greiss's pads from the right circle at the start of a power play for his fifth goal.

The Capitals were 2-for-4 on the power play after going 0-for-15 in their previous five games.
After Kuznetsov's goal, Greiss saved Washington's final 14 shots, including 10 in the third period.
"I didn't feel any frustration or panic on the bench at all," Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. "We just kind of kept playing and certainly to do it, to come back and have a chance to win in overtime you need good goaltending against that team."
The Red Wings pulled within 2-1 at 9:17 when Filip Hronek, a healthy scratch the previous two games, skated around Vanecek, fed the puck through the crease from behind Vanecek and Erne knocked it in.
"'Fil' sees the ice so well, he got the goalie out of the net and there's not much I had to do," Erne said.
Fabbri tied it 2-2 at 2:03 of the third period when he scored on the rebound of Erne's shot.
"When we have the lead and we're not playing our best, we've got to find a way to finish that game 2-0 or 2-1," Capitals defenseman Nick Jensen said.
NOTES: Ovechkin is four goals shy of passing Brett Hull (741) for fourth on the NHL's all-time list. … Ovechkin needs four power-play goals to pass Dave Andreychuk (274) for first on the NHL all-time list. … Larkin has scored five points (two goals, three assists) in his past three games. … Detroit center Mitchell Stephens won 7 of 10 face-offs. … The Capitals' seven-game point streak to start the season (4-0-3) ties the second-longest season-starting streak in their history (2011-12: 7-0-0). The longest is nine, set last season (6-0-3).
