Maple Leafs' Bernier blanks Red Wings

DETROIT - Jonathan Bernier made 38 saves for his third shutout of the season in the Toronto Maple Leafs' 1-0 win against the Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena on Sunday.
Michael Grabner scored for Toronto (23-34-11). It was the Maple Leafs' first regulation win since Feb. 25; they are 2-6-1 in their past nine games.

Bernier became the first Maple Leafs goalie to shut out the Red Wings since Curtis Joseph on Dec. 6, 2000.
"I felt great from the get-go," Bernier said. "We felt we dominated this game from the start and we wanted it."
Petr Mrazek made 26 saves for Detroit (34-24-11), which was 0-for-3 on the power play.
"You've got to start with getting pucks to the net and then you've got to try to be there for second chances," Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg said. "I thought we had some quality chances but not enough. Once again, it comes down to power play, we didn't really create enough there today either. When teams play like this, it's really tight. You've got to take advantage when they're in the box."

Grabner scored the game's only goal with 30 seconds left in the second period when he was taken down by Red Wings defenseman Danny DeKeyser and the puck slid past Mrazek and into the net. The play was originally called a penalty shot, but after a review by the NHL Situation Room in Toronto it was ruled that the puck slid into the net before it was dislodged.
"(I) just tried to get to the net and trying to protect the puck and I got knocked down and slid into the net," Grabner said. "I saw the puck out of the corner of my eye go in and I knew that I didn't touch the goalie. … I didn't feel it hit me or anything. I got a lucky bounce."
It was Grabner's first goal in 31 games; he hadn't scored since Jan. 2.
"He got behind us and he made a good play knocking down the pass," DeKeyser said. "I can't say much about the goal. It looked like it went in. They ruled it a goal. That's how it stands. I don't have much else to say about that."
Said Mrazek: "He had a breakaway, just tried to make a first save and you know, it went off my pads straight on his leg or [rear end] and went in with him. So I didn't see if it went in before he moved the net or not."

The Red Wings are battling to make the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the 25th consecutive season. Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock, who guided Detroit for 10 seasons before leaving for Toronto last summer, wants them in the postseason.
"To be honest with you, I'm cheering for them," he said. "Detroit is important to me and I want to see them in the playoffs."
An apparent goal by Red Wings forward Luke Glendening 3:06 into the second period was waved off because it was ruled that he swiped the puck into the net with his hand.
What appeared to be goal by Toronto forward Ben Smith at 12:58 of the first period was waved off because he knocked the puck in with his arm.
Mrazek made a big save on William Nylander from the bottom of the right circle 1: 20 into the game. He then denied Nazem Kadri on a breakaway at 5:15.
Detroit forward Darren Helm did not play because of an illness.
