"I think a lot of guys put a lot in today, especially on the defensive side of the game to make sure that things stay out of our net," Pietrangelo said. "Overall, a pretty good game. Got away from it a bit there in the second, but we grabbed it there in the third and it was a big push tonight."
St. Louis is tied with the Anaheim Ducks for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Western Conference having played one more game.
Andreas Athanasiou scored, and Jimmy Howard made 23 saves for the Red Wings (26-27-10), who trail the Columbus Blue Jackets by seven points for the second wild card from the Eastern Conference.
"I'm not worried about St. Louis, to be dead honest with you," Detroit coach Jeff Blashill said. "I'm worried about us, and I think we need to have desperation right now. We're trying to do the same thing they are, and that's try to make the playoffs. … I thought that our guys played hard and we competed hard. You've got to find ways to score a little bit more. I still think we got a little more in us though."

Upshall scored 1:12 into the second period to give the Blues a 1-0 lead. Colton Parayko made a move past Henrik Zetterberg toward the net, Howard made the initial save, but Upshall poked the loose puck for his first goal since Dec. 30 (19 games).
It was the first time the Blues have scored first in six games.
"I told Parayko just to skate the puck all the way down the ice and into the blue paint and you'll get an apple (assist) every time," Upshall said. "... We need to find ways to get dirty goals, no question. The puck, for example, on my goal, those pucks have been going behind the net or very rarely have they stopped before the net where we can go get second opportunities."
Pietrangelo's one-timer from the right circle made it 2-0 at 14:37 of the third period.
Athanasiou scored with 1:45 remaining, an extra-attacker goal that made it 2-1.
"We came out good," Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg said. "I thought we matched their intensity from the first, and the game was a little back and forth there. It would have been nice to get the first goal, but they got that one and we still hung in there."

They said it

"I thought in the first, it was good. I thought in the second, it slipped a little bit and I didn't think we were quite as desperate in the second in terms of winning pucks and execution. I thought we had opportunities in the [offensive] zone to go low to high and shoot pucks. I thought we lost puck battles and I didn't think we were inside enough in the third, so we've just got to keep grinding on that and we've got to outcompete and outwork opponents." -- Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill
"Those guys are workers, those guys have success this year. Whether it's [Paul Stastny] being out (traded) or just kind of where we're at, we need guys to step up, and I believed that those guys were ready to step up." -- Blues coach Mike Yeo on starting the game with the fourth line of Kyle Brodziak, Scottie Upshall and Chris Thorburn
"The [Pietrangelo] goal, there's only a few guys in the League that can go get pucks like that, make moves and feed guys for one-timers. That's his bread and butter. We feed off those type of plays [Jaden Schwartz] makes on a daily basis." -- Blues left wing Scottie Upshall
