Detroit Red Wings forward Andreas Athanasiou was placed on injured reserve Friday with a lower-body injury.
Athanasiou, 22, was injured in the first period of a 3-1 victory against the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday at Joe Louis Arena, on a hit by Canucks defenseman Nikita Tryamkin. Mlive.com reports the injury is a sprained knee.

The Red Wings recalled forward Anthony Mantha from Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League to take Athanasiou's place on the roster.
Athanasiou, Detroit's fourth-round pick (No. 110) in the 2012 NHL Draft, has four goals and one assist in 13 games this season. He had 14 points (nine goals, five assists) in 37 games last season, his first in the NHL.
Mantha, 22, the No. 20 pick in the 2013 NHL Draft, had two goals and an assist in 10 games with the Red Wings last season.
