The Game

Ottawa Senators defenseman Erik Karlsson will miss his second game to start the season, against the Detroit Red Wings at Canadian Tire Centre.

The two-time Norris Trophy winner had surgery to repair torn tendons in his left foot June 14.

Goaltender Craig Anderson will start for Ottawa, which opened its season with a 5-4 shootout loss to the Washington Capitals on Thursday in which they were unable to hold 3-1 and 4-3 leads in the third period.

Goaltender Jimmy Howard is expected to start for the Red Wings, who won their season opener 4-2 against the Minnesota Wild on Thursday in the first game played at Little Caesars Arena.

Players to watch

Red Wings defenseman Mike Green sparked the offense against the Wild with four assists, two on the power play, and played 23:41.

Senators center Derick Brassard had a goal and two assists in the opener. He had surgery on his right shoulder to repair a torn labrum June 6 and didn't play in a preseason game.

They said it

"Power plays win or lose games, so we knew we had to get better on the power play. We've been practicing quite a bit and right now I think we have two great units." -- Red Wings forward Anthony Mantha, who had one of Detroit's two power-play goals against Minnesota

"The team is doing just fine without me right now, which gives me a good comfort level in my process, in my healing. I think it's going to go straight from pretty much no contact to playing a game and when that is, we're not really sure yet, but we're not too far away." -- Karlsson
