Greiss leads Red Wings over Rangers in shootout

NEW YORK -- Thomas Greiss made 37 saves, and the Detroit Red Wings defeated the New York Rangers 3-2 in a six-round shootout at Madison Square Garden on Thursday.

Greiss didn't allow a goal against the last five shooters he faced, stopping Filip Chytil in the bottom of the sixth round to clinch the win after Pius Suter scored in the top of the sixth.
"You don't win in this league without really good goaltending," Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. "'Greisser' gave us that."
Mika Zibanejad scored the Rangers goal in the shootout after scoring the tying goal in the third period.
Dylan Larkin scored to extend his point streak to seven games (six goals, eight assists) and Troy Stecher scored his first goal of the season for the Red Wings (23-22-6), who have won three of four overall and three of their past four on the road dating to Jan. 28.
It was their eighth road win in 24 games (8-13-3).
"It's huge for us," Greiss said. "On the road we haven't been that good this year, it's definitely something we have to work on. Overall, as a team, we took a big step here tonight and it's good to see."

K'Andre Miller scored, and Igor Shesterkin made 31 saves for the Rangers (31-13-5), who had their three-game winning streak end. They lost at home for the second time in 10 games since Jan. 2 (8-1-1).
"The second half of the game, I liked our game, but the first half we came real flat, obviously, and Detroit took it to us pretty good," Rangers coach Gerard Gallant said. "It should have been more than 1-0 but [Shesterkin] played real good. But the second half we played good enough to get back in. We probably got the one point we deserved, but no more."
Zibanejad tied the game 2-2 on the power play at 11:51 with a one-timer from the left circle off a pass from Adam Fox, who was tripped behind the Rangers net by Robby Fabbri 34 seconds earlier.
Blashill said he thought the Red Wings were better after Zibanejad's goal than they were prior to it.
"We did this well, we got pucks out," Blashill said. "That's something we continue to harp on. We defended too much but we did get pucks out. I thought we were better as the period went along."
Larkin gave the Red Wings a 2-1 lead at 13:48 of the second period, 90 seconds after Miller scored to tie it 1-1 at 12:18.
Danny DeKeyser's shot from the left point went wide and banked off the end boards. The puck came out to Larkin at the bottom of the right circle. He one-timed it high to the short side and the puck went in off the tip of Shesterkin's glove.
"It is the power of shooting the puck," Blashill said. "It's something that we've tried to get across to our players, shots create chaos."

DET@NYR: Larkin capitalizes on juicy rebound

Miller scored on a wraparound after getting the puck off a face-off win by Barclay Goodrow in the left circle. The defenseman took the puck down through the circle, around the net and tucked it tightly inside the right post.
The Rangers felt they had the pressure on the Red Wings after what Fox called a "sluggish start" that started with Stecher's goal at 2:18 of the first period to give Detroit a 1-0 lead.
"We had some good chances after that, some great saves by their goalie and a couple other looks," Fox said. "That's just the way it goes sometimes. It just wasn't our night like that tonight."
Stecher was playing in his third game since coming back from a wrist injury that kept him out of the lineup for 37 straight games from Nov. 6-Feb. 9.
He scored with a shot from the right point that went in off Rangers defenseman Zac Jones.
"Good for him, good for us," Blashill said. "Happy for him. He's worked really hard to get back. It hasn't been easy. Those guys that go out with the long-term injuries, it is hard mentally. You're away from the team, it can be lonely for sure. It's been a long grind to get him back going and he's still fighting through some pain, so great for him to be able to score."
