Abdelkader fined for spearing in Red Wings game against Islanders

Assessed $5,000 penalty for incident involving Mayfield in first period Tuesday

Detroit Red Wings forward Justin Abdelkader has been fined $5,000, the maximum allowable under the collective bargaining agreement, for spearing New York Islanders defenseman Scott Mayfield on Tuesday, the NHL Department of Player Safety announced.

The incident occurred at 19:17 of the first period in Detroit's 6-3 win at Barclays Center. Abdelkader was assessed a minor penalty for slashing.

The money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.
