DET@EDM: Glendening nets second goal of the game

EDMONTON -- Luke Glendening scored two goals for the Detroit Red Wings in a 3-2 win against the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place on Tuesday.

Jimmy Howard made 32 saves, and Dylan Larkin scored for Detroit (19-25-7), which won the finale of its three-game Western Canada road trip after losing the first two.
"It was nice to be able to finish one," Glendening said. "This trip hasn't been kind to us in that respect (3-2 loss at the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday; 6-4 at the Calgary Flames on Friday). But we've played some pretty good hockey, and to get some results before the break is huge for us."

Draisaitl had a goal and assist, and Matt Benning scored for Edmonton (23-24-3), which has lost three straight. Mikko Koskinen made 24 saves and McDavid had an assist. He has at least one point in 13 of his past 15 games.
"We just have to keep battling," McDavid said. "We have said everything that there is to say; it is just up to us to play now. We have had good stretches and we have had bad stretches. We just need to find the consistency."
Larkin scored at 4:03 of the second period when he one-timed Gustav Nyquist's pass at the right face-off circle to give the Red Wings a 1-0 lead.

Glendening made it 2-0 at 10:01 on a backhand shot.
"We started this game the way we have the last number of games. We played very, very good hockey for two periods," Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. "Our pressure was good, and I thought we had the better of the play for two periods. We found a way to play good and win. We talked about that. It's certainly not satisfying to play good and lose, you have to find a way to play good and win."
Draisaitl's 27th goal of the season made it 2-1 at 4:31 of the third period.
Glendening scored his second of the game at 6:28 on a rush off the left wing to make it 3-1.
"It was frustrating," Glendening said. "Our line had been out there for the goal against, and to get one back quick was nice. But the biggest thing for this team is to get a little confidence going, and two points is huge for us."

Benning scored at 17:34 of the third period with Koskinen on the bench for an extra skater for the 3-2 final.
The Red Wings and Oilers will have their mandatory five-day break after the 2019 Honda NHL All-Star Weekend. Edmonton is 2-4-0 in its past six games.
"When you're chasing games like we're doing right now, that's a formula for losing," Oilers coach Ken Hitchcock said. "We're chasing games every night and the other team can sit back against that one [top] line and defend. It's hard, because they're looking at five people all night. When you're chasing games, that's not a winning formula."

They said it

"It feels really good to get two points going into the (mandatory five-day break after the 2019 Honda NHL All-Star Weekend) feeling good about our game. We played a solid game and we really didn't give McDavid and Draisaitl a whole lot, even if they found a way to get on the score sheet. We took a lot of time and space away from them. That's the way we have to play, and it's a huge two points for us going into the break." -- Red Wings forward Dylan Larkin
"We just know we've got to get more from some people, and we have to figure out a way. That's our job." -- Oilers coach Ken Hitchcock
