The Bruins, who won their second straight game and are 8-1-0 in their past nine, had lost their prior five games with the Red Wings, including 3-1 at Detroit on Feb. 9.
"We knew what our last couple against these guys what the result has been, so that's added incentive," Bruins forward Charlie Coyle said. "Every point's huge from here on out, as we all know. And we want to be playing our best hockey heading in here. That's what we tried to bring tonight, especially against a team who's had our number. So it definitely feels good to kind of play that way and win playing the right way and feeling good about ourselves."
Jonathan Bernier made 37 saves for the Red Wings (14-42-4), who lost their third straight game and have two wins in their past 15 games (2-12-1). Bernier has lost his past three starts.
"Like I said even when I was winning, you've just got to focus on your own job," Bernier said. "You can't let three, four losses in a row get to you, you just got to keep working hard, keep doing your thing and give the best chance for your team to win some hockey games."

DET@BOS: Helm follows rebound with shorthanded goal

Darren Helm scored a shorthanded goal at 3:12 of the first period to give the Red Wings a 1-0 lead. He stole Torey Krug's pass in the Detroit zone and scored on a 2-on-1 off his own rebound.
Charlie McAvoy tied the game 1-1 at 8:01 of the second period with a shot from the slot after he stole Mike Green's clearing pass.
"It's always fun to contribute that way for sure, it helps the team," McAvoy said of his second goal of the season. "If we're able to take a goal like that and then get momentum going and win a game ... whatever I can do
Bergeron scored shorthanded at 9:40 for a 2-1 lead. Brad Marchand forced Green into a turnover and Bergeron scored on a backhand shot from the slot after receiving a pass from Marchand.

Coyle extended the lead to 3-1 at 12:30 of the second by tipping a shot from McAvoy. Pastrnak scored at 13:03 of the third period for a 4-1 lead; he is tied with Toronto Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews for the NHL lead.
"The challenge is to make sure they have to work for their chances," Detroit forward Frans Nielsen said. "And especially in the second period, we made it too easy on them. They got chances because of turnovers or a bad mistake from us. … It's a great team, but they have to at least work for their chances out there. [Bernier] had a great game, by far our best player on the ice, and we still let up four."

They said it

"It's frustrating, it's disappointing, but we've got 20-something games left here that we've got to battle through. It's easy when things are going badly just to shut it down, but we've got 20 games here, guys got a lot to prove, no one's had a great year here, so we've got a lot to prove to ourselves and management and we've just got to be proud put that jersey on every day." -- Red Wings forward Luke Glendening
"I guess now you're starting to accumulate some, so it means you're starting to establish some consistency in the League, in your craft. So that's the positive part of it." -- Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy on his 200th NHL win
