Defending Memorial Cup champs fall in opening game of the season to Moncton 3-1 @NHLdotcom

SAINT JOHN, N.B. - The Memorial Cup champs couldn't pick up where they left off as the Moncton Wildcats edged the Saint John Sea Dogs 3-1 in the opening game of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League season Thursday night.

Alex Saulnier scored twice for Moncton, while Devon MacAusland also counted.

Alexandre Beauregard replied for Saint John.

Roman Will made 34 stops for the victory, while Charlie Millen turned away 23 shots for the Sea Dogs.

The Wildcats opened the scoring 7:03 into the first period with the man advantage when Saulnier beat Millen.

Saulnier doubled Moncton's lead in the second period, but the Sea Dogs pulled a goal back through Beauregard before the intermission.

MacAusland gave Moncton a little breathing room with a goal exactly midway through the third period.
